What is the Annual Fund?

Every independent school relies on an Annual Fund to support the day- to- day operating costs of the school. As a school with a sliding scale tuition, Greene Hill is even more dependent on the demonstrated gifts of support from school families, staff and community. This is the school's first Annual Fund and an important time to underscore your belief in Greene Hill School's mission with a donation.

Why is the Annual Fund necessary?

For the current academic year, tuition and other fees will only cover about 90% of the school's operating expenses. As the school grows, we anticipate that this gap will grow as our payroll, facilities and material costs increase to serve more students. In addition, we believe it is important that we offer competitive salaries and medical benefits to our full-time education staff. Most urban independent schools struggle with these same demands. Indeed, even established independent schools typically fund only a portion of their operations through tuition. The Annual Fund exists to close part of this gap, with the remainder being made up by our other fundraising activities.

Who gives to the Annual Fund?

Parents, Grandparents and other family members of current students, community supporters, faculty and staff are the Annual Fund supporters who believe in Greene Hill School's commitment to promoting intellectual curiosity while guiding children to become dedicated members of a diverse, democratic society.

When should I give to the Fund?

You may make a gift or a pledge at any time but we ask that you do so before August 31, the end of the school's fiscal year.

How much should I give?

We ask that you support the Annual Fund to the best of your ability. Gifts of any amount are valued as indication of your commitment to Greene Hill School.

Why doesn't the school raise tuition?

Greene Hill School is dedicated to providing affordable progressive education for Brooklyn children. The actual cost per student would be prohibitive for many families, and would work against creating the community that is at the heart of our mission. Instead we ask families to pay tuition in proportion with their income. It is also worth noting that for 2010-2011 we plan to begin offering a limited number of full scholarships to families in our community. The annual fund will become a vital component of our operating budget and our mission.

Can I get a matching gift from my employer?

Many organizations have a philanthropic matching gift program. Please ask your employer if they will match a charitable donation to Greene Hill School.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

Greene Hill School is a pending 501c3 educational organization. As such, we expect to have this status by January and any gift made will be retroactively tax-deductible to our incorporation date of June 22, 2009.

How much of a difference does my gift make?

Because Greene Hill School is small and new, your gift is invaluable and means more than it would to a larger organization.

Why is participation important?

Your participation generates enthusiasm and encourages others to join you in supporting the school. The Annual Fund demonstrates the support of Greene Hill's community and will help us attract other people and corporations to give to the school.

What are the other fundraising activities besides the Annual Fund?

Greene Hill School has several events throughout the year that help support the school and raise community awareness. However, at most independent schools the Annual Fund is the most important indication of support throughout the year.
